Management and Chairmanship of Orkney Zerowaste

For 10 years, I have managed and chaired, Orkney Zerowaste, a local Orkney Charity that aims to reduce waste by reusing items rather than throwing them away or recycling them

I am responsible for managing our commercial Recyclates collection scheme. Orkney Zerowaste collects Recyclates from businesses and takes them to the Council’s recycling centre for a commercial fee. The profits are then used to fund the charitable activities of the Charity.

One of the charitable activities is running a reuse yard in Stromness, Orkney, that takes in items that people no longer want and provides them to other people who might make use of them. This prevents them going into the waste stream. I am responsible for managing the yard, including volunteer programs and the finances.

We also run a small grants scheme  that provides grants to local people and organisations to help them develop programmes to reuse items that they would otherwise throw away.
